The Master is the last plug-in in your chain — insert it on the 2-bus and it does the two jobs that finish a record: tone-shaping with a 32-band mastering EQ, then glue and loudness with a master-bus compressor. Everything runs in double precision at zero latency, and disengaged, it's bit-transparent.

Spectrum & response overlay

A 96-column color-graded spectrum analyzer with peak-hold sits behind the glowing summed-response curve, so you see exactly what you're carving. Hovering a node isolates its bell and shows a floating FREQ / GAIN / Q readout.

Auto-release adapts from ~0.09 s on transients to ~1.1 s on sustained material for hands-off glue. A per-model Harmonics control adds saturation and weight — and at exactly 0 the shaper is bypassed for a mathematically clean path.

Key the compressor from the program signal, an external stereo audio sidechain bus, or MIDI notes for rhythmic ducking. A detector high-pass (20–500 Hz) keeps bass from over-triggering, and LISTEN solos the key.

01 — Getting Started

Install & first launch

The Master is the mastering-bus finisher in the NHOF Software suite. It does two things, and does them at the highest fidelity: it shapes tone with a 32-band mastering equalizer, then glues, weights and controls level with a dialed-in master-bus compressor. Everything runs in double precision, adds zero latency, and — crucially — a flat, disengaged plugin is bit-transparent. It does nothing to your signal until you ask it to.

Installing — the one-click installer (recommended)

  • macOS — open The Master Installer.pkg and follow the prompts. It's Universal (Apple Silicon + Intel) and Apple-notarized — installs clean, no warnings. It places the VST3, AU and Standalone for you and removes any older copy so you never run a stale build.
  • Windows — run The Master Installer.exe. (Right-click the .zip → Properties → tick Unblock before extracting if shown; if SmartScreen appears, More info → Run anyway.)
  • Launch your DAW and rescan plug-ins if it doesn't pick up The Master automatically.

Prefer to place the files yourself?

  • macOS — copy the VST3 and AU into the standard system plug-in folders (/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3 and .../Components) and the Standalone app into Applications.
  • Windows — copy The Master.vst3 into C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3; the Standalone app can live anywhere convenient.

Where to put it

The Master is a master-bus / mastering tool. Insert it as the last processor on your master (2-bus) output, or on the master bus of The Blapp Machine. You can also run it Standalone to master a bounced file or to process a live feed.

A 60-second first pass

  1. Insert The Master last on your 2-bus and play the loudest section of your song.
  2. Drag a few EQ nodes to shape tone — pull down a harsh spot, add a touch of air up top.
  3. Engage the compressor with COMP, pick the GLUE model, and lower THRESH until the GR meter shows a few dB of movement on peaks.
  4. Bring MAKEUP up to match the bypassed loudness, then toggle BYPASS to check you've improved the mix, not just made it louder.
02 — Signal Flow

EQ first, then glue

Audio moves through The Master in a fixed, deliberate order — tone-shape the bus, then compress it:

Input gain hits the EQ first so the compressor reacts to the tone you've already dialed — carve a resonance out before it triggers the detector, and the glue stays smooth. The compressor then acts on the shaped signal, and a final output trim sets your delivery level. The BYPASS toggle in the header passes audio through clean while the meters stay live, so you can keep watching levels while you compare against the processed sound.

Why order mattersEQ-before-compression is the classic mastering move: fix the balance first so the compressor isn't wrestling a lopsided low end. If bass is over-triggering the glue, either dip it in the EQ or engage the sidechain high-pass (see §06).
03 — The Interface

Reading the window

The window opens at 1000 × 640 px and is fully resizable (from 860 × 560 up to 1600 × 1000). The face is the NHOF house look — machined controls, brass corner screws, and the diamond-N brand mark. There are five regions, top to bottom:

04 — Using the EQ

The 32-band mastering EQ

The equalizer is presented as a single large graph. The horizontal axis is a log frequency scale from 20 Hz to 20 kHz; the vertical axis is ±18 dB. Grid lines mark 30, 50, 100, 200, 500 Hz and 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 kHz, with the 0 dB line highlighted.

Spread across that range are 32 draggable band handles (nodes), color-graded from blue in the lows through teal and amber to rose in the highs. Each node is an independent bell (peaking) filter. The bands are log-spaced at roughly 3.2 bands per octave, so there is always a handle close to whatever frequency you want to touch — surgical when you need it, broad when you don't.

Working the curve

The glowing response line is the summed output of all active bands — the actual EQ shape being applied. Behind it, a live spectrum analyzer paints 96 color-graded columns with peak-hold, so you can see exactly what part of the mix you're carving.

Surgical vs. broad

  • Surgical: wheel a single node to a high Q (narrow) and pull it down a few dB to notch out a resonance, a harsh spot, or a room boom without touching neighbouring frequencies.
  • Broad / tonal: nudge two or three adjacent nodes a small amount at a low Q (wide) for gentle tilt and air — a shelf-like lift without hard filtering.
Why it stays cleanA band sitting at exactly 0 dB is true-bypassed — its filter is removed from the path, not left running at unity. A flat curve is therefore bit-transparent, and CPU cost scales only with the number of bands you actually move.
05 — The Master Compressor

Glue, weight & loudness

Below the EQ is the master-bus compressor — the suite's dialed-in glue. Engage it with the COMP toggle, then choose a character from the model selector. The three models are genuinely different DSP topologies, not presets:

Glue

Classic feed-forward VCA-style bus compressor. Soft 6 dB knee, 50/50 RMS-plus-peak detection, symmetric odd-order saturation. The transparent "hold it together" option.

Character

A feedback detector that reads its own output, with a wide 12 dB knee and RMS-heavy detection. Program-dependent release and a biased shaper add warm harmonics. Musical and forgiving.

Germ

An asymmetric germanium-style exponential shaper. 9 dB knee, peak-leaning detection. Gritty and harmonically rich — for attitude and color on the bus.

Dialing glueStart with the Glue model, RATIO ~2:1, AUTO REL on, and lower THRESH until you see 1–3 dB on the GR meter at the loudest part. That gentle, constant movement is the "everything sounds like one record" feel. Reach for Character or Germ when you want warmth or grit instead of pure transparency.
06 — Sidechain & Presets

Keying the compressor

The detector can listen to something other than the main mix. The SC source menu offers three modes:

  • SC: INTERNAL — the compressor keys off the program signal itself (normal mastering behavior).
  • SC: AUDIO — the detector reads the plugin's dedicated stereo sidechain input bus. Route any track from your DAW into it to duck the master against, for example, a kick.
  • SC: MIDI — incoming MIDI notes synthesize a percussive key envelope (fast ~1 ms attack, ~120 ms decay, velocity-scaled). Any MIDI source can drive rhythmic ducking without an audio feed.

The LISTEN toggle replaces the output with the key signal, so you can hear exactly what the compressor is reacting to while you set the SC HPF. Turn it off again before you commit.

Sidechain presets

The SC PRESET menu carries a bank of 12 factory starting points, each of which sets threshold, ratio, attack, release, SC-HPF and auto-release together:

Factory presets are read-only. Use the SAVE button to store your own; user presets persist to a JSON file in your user application-data folder and reappear in the menu on relaunch.

07 — Metering & A/B

Watching what you do

The right-hand column carries three vertical meters, updated at 60 Hz:

  • IN — input level, −60…0 dB, green → amber → red.
  • GR — gain reduction, filling downward from the top, 0…−18 dB. This is your primary compressor readout.
  • OUT — output level, same scale as IN. Watch it to keep your delivery level in check.

A/B comparison

The header carries a complete two-slot compare system:

  • A / B — instantly swaps the entire plugin state (all EQ, all comp settings) with a stored snapshot. The button text flips between "A / B" and "B / A".
  • COPY → — copies the current settings into the other slot, so you can branch from a good starting point and tweak.
  • The inactive slot is also drawn as a dashed ghost curve on the EQ graph, so you can see the difference, not just hear it.
08 — Mastering Workflow

Tips for finishing a mix or beat

  • Reference at matched loudness. Compression makes things louder, and louder always sounds "better" for a moment. Use MAKEUP to match the bypassed level, then BYPASS back and forth to judge honestly.
  • Subtractive first. On the master bus, cutting problem frequencies usually beats boosting. Notch a harsh 3 kHz or a boomy 200 Hz before you reach for air on top.
  • Small moves. On a full mix, ±1–3 dB of EQ and 1–3 dB of gain reduction is a lot. The 32 fine bands are there for precision, not for drama.
  • Let the EQ feed the comp. Because EQ comes first, fixing the low-end balance often smooths the compressor for free — the detector stops chasing an over-loud kick.
  • Use A/B for decisions. Park a conservative master in slot A and an aggressive one in slot B, then pick with your ears.
  • On a beat in The Blapp Machine, insert The Master on the master bus, glue with the Glue model, and add a touch of Germ harmonics if you want the drums to feel bigger and grittier.
09 — Troubleshooting & FAQ

Common questions

The plugin doesn't seem to be doing anything

By design, a flat EQ and a disengaged compressor are bit-transparent. Confirm BYPASS is off, engage COMP, and move an EQ node or lower THRESH so there's something to hear.

The compressor is pumping on every bass note

The low end is over-triggering the detector. Dip the lows in the EQ, or — with an external key patched — raise the SC HPF so the detector ignores sub energy. A slower ATTACK and AUTO REL on also help.

My external sidechain isn't ducking

Check that SC source is set to AUDIO and that your DAW is actually routing a track into The Master's sidechain input bus. Use LISTEN to confirm the key signal is arriving.

Does it add latency?

No. The Master is zero-latency — no lookahead, no plugin-delay compensation required — so it's safe to leave live on your master while tracking.

Why 32 EQ bands?

At roughly 3.2 bands per octave you always have a handle right where you need it, so the same EQ covers both surgical notches and broad tonal tilts without switching tools. Bands you don't touch cost nothing.

Where do my custom sidechain presets live?

They're written to a JSON file in your user application-data folder and reload automatically. Factory presets are read-only and always present.

Can I run it without a DAW?

Yes — the Standalone app (Mac & Windows) masters a bounced file or a live input directly.
